In an attempt to either assassinate U.S. President Bush, cause bodily harm to the president, or perhaps to just get him to try on a new pair of shoes, one Iraqi journalist hurled his two shoes at President Bush during a news conference in Iraq Sunday. Fortunately he succeeded in none of the above, and he only managed to grab international headlines in the stunt.
Bush dodged both throws, assuredly everyone in the room was stunned. The shoe thrower was identified as Muntadhar al-Zaidi, who was with the Egyptian based al-Baghdadia television network. The journalist were gathered in the palace of Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki for a press conference in President Bush’s farewell tour of Iraq, his fourth visit since the invasion started in 2003. None will likely be more memorable then this latest one.
Sitting so that the bottom of your shoe faces someone or throwing your shoes at a person are considered insults in Muslim culture. But al-Zaidi choose the latter before he was tackled by security. As he was being pinned down he was heard yelling, “you killed Iraqis!” President Bush was able to make light of the situation saying immediately afterward, “That was a size 10 shoe he threw at me, you may want to know.”
Not for nothin’, but since Bush is leaving office next month, he may want to consider a career in dodgeball. I hear the San Diego Crossfire are looking for a good attacker.
