On the day when President-elect Barack Obama is again recognized as one of the most accomplished individuals in the world by Time magazine announcing our next president as their Person of the Year, some people still believe that a technical loophole should have not allowed that to happen, nor is he qualified to be president of the United States. A small, but determined few have the belief that President-elect Obama is not eligible to be president because he is not a natural-born citizen of the United States of America.
Wednesday Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy rejected yet one more appeal by Philip J. Berg, a former Deputy State Attorney General, who has filed several lawsuits over the past few weeks saying that because Barack Obama was not born in the United States then he is ineligible to take the Office of President. Many of us know that one of the qualifications to be president of the United States is that you have to be a natural born citizen, but Berg claims that Obama was born in either Indonesia or Kenya, either way making him not a natural born citizen. Further claims that his birth certificate, which has been authenticated by Hawaiian state officials, is forged an illegal.
Also on Wednesday Time magazine named Barack Obama the 2008 Person of the Year. Rightfully so because of what he has accomplished this year. Obama succeeded in one of the most hotly contested and historical presidential races in the history of our nation. He has moved crowds, moved public perception, and moved time. It is not uncommon for a president to be named Time magazine’s Person of the Year, but this year many would agree that the president-elect definitely deserves it. It’s unfortunate that the day is still marred by a discontent group of people.
Not for nothin’, but many of us know this whole birth certificate conspiracy is a sham. It first came across my desk just days after the election. I didn’t pay it much mind because it was absolutely unnecessary, but in retrospect there’s a good reason why the story didn’t surface much in mainstream media until after the election. If there was any basis to it at all it would have been brought up years ago, and Obama likely would have never won. Things like this just don’t slip through the cracks. I doubt Philip Berg or anyone else would have found something out that two years of political opponents for the highest office in the nation couldn’t find out. Hopefully this will be the last time they will have to be denied and we do not hear from them again.
