The Prime Minister of Australia, Kevin Rudd called recent death and destruction from brush fires a, “mass murder.” Well over one hundred people have died in several dozens of brush fires that started in Australia this past weekend. In addition to the deaths, homes and other buildings destroyed, and scores of acres have benn burned. This is easily one of the worst disasters in the history of the country.
The fire’s, which have been igniting across the state of Victoria, come at a time when the region is experiencing one of the worst heatwaves ever recorded. But while some of the fires have been caused by lighting strikes, it is being summized that arson is to blame for a few others. It is that which prompted Rudd to say thatwhoever may be responsible may be held to charges in causing some of the fires. While the death toll is slowly climbing in the mid-100 range, the government there are preparing themselves for at least 230 fatalities. So in addition to the 126 confirmed dead, there are another 78 hospitalized with serious burns and injuries. The extent of injuries and the damage that the fire has done, many are comparing it to the destruction a massive bomb would leave.
Well this natural bomb of sorts, is leaving nothing in its wake. Schools, homes, shops, businesses, offices have all gone up. Many parts of the rural Kinglake area near Melbourne have not been spared and many others are not safe for many of these fires are still burning and with no end in sight.
Not for nothin’, but it really sucks when there’s nothing you can do to prevent this. Its a natural disaster much like hurricanes and tornadoes, and can be just as dangerous and unpredictable as both of them. On top of that, it never helps when people are literally adding fuel to the fire. The idea that some of these fires being deliberly set is unimaginable, but then again accidents do happen and that’s just an added bonus of what you have to watch out for when living in a wildfire climate.
