Terror has struck America yet one more time. Just before 3 p.m. on April 15, 2013 two explosions within blocks of each other rocked the finish line at the Boston Marathon leaving dozens of casualties. At this point, just hours after the explosion, little pieces of information are being made available, but we do know three people have been killed and over one hundred are injured. Not much is known about the devices that were used in the explosions or who is responsible, but federal authorities in Boston have launched a criminal investigation which in all likelihood could end up being a terrorist investigation.
The Boston Marathon, is easily one of the most recognized and well participated sporting events, not just in America but in the world. Just over two hours after the winner crossed the finish line, there were still hundreds of the 27,000 runners who had yet to finish when the first explosion at the side of the route near the finish line caused an immediate panic. Runners startled by the blast would barely have a moment to process what happened before the second explosion went off seconds later. Bystanders would rush to check on others closest to the plume of smoke that was still billowing from the sideline, many likely expecting another blast. The race was stopped, and a crime scene commenced.
Initial reports say one of the three dead was an 8-year-old child. Of many of the injuries, at least a dozen were critical, several other were dismembered. Initially it was believed that a suspect was in custody, but authorities have confirmed no suspects in custody, but people they are questioning. In the minutes after the explosions other reports of suspicious packages were reported all over the city. Another possible incendiary device was thought to have gone off in the John F. Kennedy Library, but later reported to be a fire, and unknown to be related to the previous two incidents at the marathon.
Not for nothin’ but this may become the world we need to get used to. This appears to be the first major terror attack in America since the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. But it’s a type of terror that’s seen in Europe, the Middle East, Central America, and several other places. It isn’t known yet if this was done by religious extremist or homeland terror that we’ve seen in the past. Those responsible for terrorist acts have been brought to justice, I can’t see how this will be any different. We pray for the victims. American vigilance has been raised.
